I feel like I have to chime in on this topic every 6 months because every time, every single time, this comes up, a lot of folks in less great situations say (out of ignorance and/or sour grapes) "There is no way that that could actually be a thing!"

And the folks at AppAmaGooBookSoft exercise a skill which is drilled into you early and pointedly say nothing. Some times, they like a tweet from one of the outside-the-company folks saying the obviously true and uncontroversial thing about their career ladder.

I think this understates the difficulty of getting to L5, but not hugely. The biggest question is whether this will still be true in the 5-7 years it takes to get there if you start now.
