YC asking for ways to improve the experience of working early at a startup ( https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=17286939 … ) has a lot of people asking "Wait, are rumors of engineers at AppAmaGooFaceSoft predictably getting $400k packages true?" Yes. Yes, they absolutely are.

Each of these companies has a career ladder. Substantially all employees who have been at them can quote the ladder by heart. They're designed to be roughly analogous with each other because a major purpose of the ladder is convincing engineers at counterparts to move.

There exists a point on the engineering career ladder where, up until that level, you are socially guaranteed of promotions contingent on continuing to execute in a worksmanlike fashion. Above that, it is usual combination of delivering value + non-trivial political games.

The "If you are not -- literally -- fired for incompetence, we will -- with the inevitability of a public school system offering retirement -- advance you to this level" terminal offering is +/- $400k. Tens of thousands of engineers have this package.

"Does that take like 30 years of experience?" In my conversations with people it's closer to 5~7 years served at AppAmaGooBookSoft but, you know, variance is a thing.

I feel like I have to chime in on this topic every 6 months because every time, every single time, this comes up, a lot of folks in less great situations say (out of ignorance and/or sour grapes) "There is no way that that could actually be a thing!"

And the folks at AppAmaGooBookSoft exercise a skill which is drilled into you early and pointedly say nothing. Some times, they like a tweet from one of the outside-the-company folks saying the obviously true and uncontroversial thing about their career ladder.

Let's test this out. Software engineers, considering your total compensation package:

I feel like @patio11 is selling a "you, too, can play as a professional in the NBA!" narrative here which is.. a disservice.

I’m out of the loop but maybe you can clarify: what decision are people facing for which this information is relevant?

Among others: a) Should I study engineering / work in software? b) Should I bother to apply to AppAmaGooBookSoft? c) Is this offer in front of me attractive with respect to market norms? d) Will my offer of $60k and free soda convince a senior Googler to join my startup?
