Home sharing certainly didn’t invent the problem of some Japanese folks not exactly being enthusiastic about foreigners living in their building but it invented “Ahh clearly a transient with no right to be here; I should call cops immediately.”

Note that being fluent in Japanese and culturally acclimated to norms of living in a Japanese building are not sufficient to guarantee that all neighbors will be enthusiastic about you breathing the same air.

:-x I don't have context, but I'm very curious - what's the best English-language non-paywalled news post you know of for this story?

Airbnb’s blog has a version with all the facts required to know what happened with regards to the regulatory change. The underlying issue is “Airbnb use has taken off in Tokyo, largely by folks running apartments as unlicensed hotels targeting foreign tourists.”

Been saying for last 3yrs. Airbnb has biggest regulatory risk of any sharing econ co. People very invested in homes/condos/zoning in a way they aren't for cabs/labor/etc

Feels like this isn't priced in well enough. I think Airbnb has 10x regulatory risk of Uber, and worth half or 3/4 as much in stock.
