Is there _ever_ a case for big functions?

It is often easier (for some people) to understand the underlying logic of a foreign program if the code is all laid out in one long function that you can read and understand linearly. Locally inlining just for reading is a good technique for understanding other people’s code.

Do you know Robert C. Martin's book "Clean Code"? If so, how useful do you think it is w.r.t. your stated concerns? I think there is a *huge* amount of immaturity in the field of programming, going deep into core/fundamental concerns.

I think he is too dogmatic, exactly an example of this unproductive binary thinking

I thought the same about the Top 3 Programming Languages thing.

Most often the “it depends” answers are bound to trivial, insignificant or unsolvable problems. Issues like “ShOuLd I uSe TaBs oR SpAcEs???” are just a distraction from real problems that add tangible value. And I would venture to say that they stem from boredom or disinterest.

I’d be inclined to say that these problems are primarily uninteresting which gives rise to the polarised opinions as a secondary quality.

Agreed. Hard rules and absolutes are a red flag. Fundamentalism.
