4. Another student pulls out his phone and reports at least five presidents had been in the Klan. Um, source? I asked. Just @Google.

15. Or better yet, look up a peer-reviewed book or article! Not sure where to find one? Ask a historian! We're all over Twitter!
-
16. Just remember that the construction of historical knowledge is an ongoing process, and must always be renewed with good sourcing. Fin.

Agreed. I've reported this internally at Google, so hopefully people will take a look at this soon.

@dawnahukanna Disinformation is an aspect of the Filter Bubble. I wonder how many of those students were logged in? -
I'd be surprised if a result like this were personalized. (agreed on your larger point though)
-
would the students know the significance being logged in has on "Google"?
-
not sure, but I'm not aware of filter bubbles affecting this type of factual query
-
Being logged in affects results based on no. of params like location, previous browsing history/searches, posts etc.
-
Right, I'm just doubting that it would affect an answer like this, but am open to examples where it does.

I teach my students to go to Wikipedia, if at all possible. This causes tension with some of my colleagues.

Why is this Google's impetus? Just because they sort the stuff doesn't mean the researcher has any less responsibility.
-
If you ask for technical solutions for social issues you just systemise your assumptions. That's exactly the root issue here.
-
Students have access to very powerful tools, but they are not being taught how to work with them. Google shows cultural relevance
-
It can not possibly be aware of the historical or social context of that relevance. That is entirely on our fleshy meat brains.
