HB 100 passed on to its third reading! We're just a few steps away from this bill becoming law and bringing Virginia up to speed with the other 6 US states that have jury sentencing.

My Dress Code Equity Act just passed the education subcommittee. The bill will be the first in the nation to require schools to have equitable dress code and hair style policies.

I’m so glad that folks are working on these issues and that law enforcement is raising its voice to fight for what is a floor of basic care. But seriously, how is this even a debate?

Absolutely agree. As elected officials, we benefited and continue to benefit from the work of scholars and activists who’ve done the work of advocating for reform when it wasn’t popular to do so.

3/3 The commissioners will be the one deciding who gets on a working group, what the mission of the group is, and what agenda to focus one. If Barr was serious about “administration of justice” he wouldn’t have formed a commission made up exclusively of law enforcement actors.

2/3 or formerly incarcerated person. I may be a prosecutor now but it’s hard for me to see how you can hope to have a meaningful discussion about justice with only one side. And, no, the fact that they’re promising in the future to have more diverse working groups is not enough.

1/3 I’ve written extensively about why Barr is wrong to wage war on reform. Here, I’ll point out that on a commission with “administration of justice” in its name, it’s telling that every commissioner is from law enforcement, & not one is a public defender, academic, activist

One aspect of the CA job that doesn’t get a lot of publicity and attention is reviewing and consulting on proposed bills. I’ve had the chance to do so both at the start of the session and this week in Richmond. This is how criminal justice reform will ultimately get shaped.
