I am absolutely an enthusiastic Deadhead, but yeah, junkies (Garcia) usually don't give a shit. The man could flat-out rip it, though, high or not. I will also stand on Steve Earle's coffee table and argue that Robert Hunter is a better songwriter than Dylan or Townes.

i agree with this. i love townes van zandt and bob dylan. but garcia-hunter is hard to beat.

I think what they didn’t give a shit about was being part of someone else’s idea of “the” counterculture. Certainly after ‘70 they consciously pulled away from entanglements with any movements but their own.

This is a wonderful take and one I'd never considered. Henley' Deadhead line makes it that much better. Given Robert Hunter's I-don't-give-a-shit-about-anything nature of his lyrics makes this all more plausible. Most Deadheads place this song in the middle of the catalog...

Are you referencing just the ToG lyrics, or his lyrics in general? If the latte, that's way off imo.

...remember going to Dead shows circa 1987 and seeing a whole new group of people dressed as hippies get pissed when the band didn't play "Touch." A young woman near me bitched hard after an amazing show. I turned, said "The Dead don't work that way" and walked away.

Ha! Yeah, I remember reading about their unwillingness to play it at a show attended by some record execs when it was charting. It was sort of beyond "fuck you" and more like "you don't even exist to us".
