Crowe gets a lot of flak for naive sentimentalism (often rightly so IMO), but some of the scenes you mention in that movie cut closer to the bone than he gets credit for. (That scene of Mahoney's credit card getting declined...oof.)

I loved the payoff line when Lloyd talks to the guys at the gas station: "If you guys know so much about women, how come you’re here at like the Gas ‘n’ Sip on a Saturday night completely alone drinking beers with no women anywhere?"
