I too might revive my newsletter ways. In the past I've shared what I recommend listening to and why. In future, I'll probably also write on nature + climate questions, plus art, lit, living in these times. Sign up if you wanna get this, eventually! mineralsociety.substack.com

In recent years I’ve become completely fed up with the casual dark view of human nature as fundamentally selfish and need governments to behave. When you look into it deeper you see this pessimistic attitude is born of imperialism, capitalism, and elite panic.

During Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans was painted as a city in chaos. Looters. Violence. Lawlessness. But who were the real monsters? @RebeccaSolnit helps explain “veneer theory” and why hope in humanity is actually what’s punk rock. n.pr/3WDNczB

When asked what it's like to watch her mother play soccer, my 9yo said it's "a learning experience." "It was kind of amazing to find soccer again...reclaiming some of my identity." -Me Honored to be a part of this beautiful audio postcard w/ teammates and my daughter.

“Nobody wants their kid to be sick and miserable all the time. …Wearing a mask for parts of the year keeps them healthy, and that means they spend more time at school. They learn more. They have a better time. …Parents get a break.” jessicawildfire.substack.com/p/we-convinced

This delightful tweet is making the rounds on various social media sites, and I’ve seen people asking “no, really, though, does anyone know?” So in case you’ve wondered: they do know what they’re doing! Have a dam 🧵 about 🦫.

do beavers even know what they’re doing or do they just see water flowing down a river and think “absolutely not”

Annie Ernaux: "My desire to write never had anything to do with writing a beautiful book or being part of the literary world. Not at all. What I wanted to do was succeed in saying something that belonged to me.... I am the place where an experience demands to be written."

In my first edition of 'sheets to the wind', I found connections between @bjork's experience of making Medúlla in early motherhood, @thejessicadore on accompaniment, @imontheradio on culturally responsive therapy, + @carriejenkins on love with @seanilling. sheetstothewind.substack.com/p/sheets-to-th

I liked how Björk spoke about early motherhood, and how I'm seeking more glimpses of parenthood that feel life-giving to all involved — parenting which includes ongoing creative life and rich community.

ICYMI over the holiday, we dropped a special episode on the practice of cold water dipping to start off a new year.

I recently got to know a group of cold water "dippers" in Maine. Talking with them was amazing: they're thoughtful, funny, vulnerable, generous. They told me about immersing themselves in the icy sea, their relationships with winter, sobriety, pregnancy—and pregnancy loss (cont)

“I think the key point… isn’t about accessing federal funds, but is about how restricting the self-governance powers and authorities of the Wabanaki Nations chills all forms of economic development,” said Kirk Francis, chief of the Penobscot Nation.
