I’m so mad at Bret Stephens’s irresponsibility (and the TImes’s irresponsibility in printing his column this week) that I can barely see straight.

There is no meaningful debate between actual subject matter experts about whether lockdowns need to continue in lower-population-density states. They do. And the fact that Stephens doesn’t site any of them is the tell that he’s bullshitting his readers.

Basically everyone wants to get back to some semblance of normal life, and Stephens is preying on that desire in order to carry water for the Republican party, whose Governors and Senators want to "reopen" their states. But we know the end result: people will die.

Stephens either doesn't not care about the readers of the Times (including my parents who found it "very persuasive") dying, or he assumes that the thing he's advocating for won't happen, but he can use it to pressure Dems and lighten pressure on the GOP.

So really, he's either a sociopath or totally disingenuous. Either way, like his global warming denialism, his opinions on this subject should have no place in the discourse. These are matters of fact, not opinion, and he's lying to the Times's readers.

          "Cite" not "Site" above. Sorry.

ALSO THIS. Stephens is claiming to be the voice of a popular position that is actually widely unpopular. https://twitter.com/nickgourevitch/status/1254048010079698944?s=21 …https://twitter.com/nickgourevitch/status/1254048010079698944 …

Hey Bret Stephens (who you can’t even @ anymore) and @nytopinion, this assertion in your column today has no basis in fact. Polls show wide majority support for stay-at-home orders and opposition to reopening too aggressively. What you call “much of America” is a fringe position. pic.twitter.com/ZLJTVsOW2K
