. But if you live in America you need dollars to pay taxes, mortgages, rent, insurance, or utility bills, make car or student loan payments, buy groceries, gas, etc. What does anyone need Bitcoin for?

I think you're misunderstanding his point. You *need* USD to pay taxes (because the US gov doesn't accept BTC). The other items he mentioned are similar (although obviously not the same: people who you pay rent to *may* accept BTC - but most don't).
I was just surprised it came as first thing. I first thing to buying goods and stuff.
