Users would have to perform all their own security updates etc? And there would be the issue of compatibility. I think perhaps a limited target market thus lack of development

Ubuntu on a phone is a start. You can use apt repositories where builds are signed by maintainers and community

if only we are moving more towards integration of technology than away from it, we are constantly monitored through our devices and our data is valuable so I can't see the investment coming for more secure devices hopefully they do but we have no real privacy any more

Open hardware is one necessary, but far from sufficient, requirement of achieving meaningful digital privacy and security. Here's what we need:https://www.trustlesscomputing.org/paradigms

I am using a Android Google phone and it's the most convenient and the most privacy violating phone I ever had. Used CyanogenMod a while back. Switched because inconvenient.
-
Problem with Cyanogen&CO is that then you have likely to use FDroid. I would like to see an Ubuntu mobile getting APT software repos. That would make me happy enough.
