Can be many: attempt to manipulate markets (bitfinex is the most liquid BTC/USD market so once is not available it's easier to manipulate other platforms), competition, ... Not sure really, but it failed miserably.
When we have to protect and shield a #bitfinex by such aggressive attacks I get a huge adrenaline rush, a mix of excitement and little dose of anger.
