TEALS is a fantastic program where software engineers help out in high school CS classrooms. They're now accepting applications for the fall: (And there are regional info sessions to find out more!)

Welcome to World : 02 02 2020 This is the first time in over 900 years (since 11/11/1111) the date is palindromic no matter the date format. It’s also the 33rd day of the year with 333 days left!

I'm looking for an example use of hexadecimal numbers that is *not* RGB, UUIDs, memory addresses, or Mac addresses. Any ideas?

I hereby decree that all Silicon Valley programmers must work from home every winter so as to prevent the spread of flu in the bay area.

I think I'm so excited about CSS animations with SVG because I miss Flash. There, I admitted it. Flash was so freaking fun.

Came up with another excuse to use CSS animation with SVGs: an illustration of message passing in a distributed computing system. Uploading a GIF here since Twitter doesn't allow SVG uploads:

Looking for recommendations of baby-compatible board/party games. Anti-examples: One Night Werewolf (when eyes are closed, babies do who knows what!), Terra Mystica (power pellets = choking hazards), Treasure Island (hard to draw if using 1 hand for nursing). Thnx!

Are browsers ever planning to add native restart buttons to animated GIFs and SVGs? I would realllllly like that for the articles I write. I don't need the overhead of a video player, I just want users to be able to easily start from the beginning.

My parallel cat detection demo now uses KittyDar (from 's TxJS talk 6 years ago). It's not as accurate as TensorFlow, but it's a better fit for this parallelization demo due to making wayyy less HTTP requests. Plus it highlights the faces!

Growing up, I knew that my dad worked on "parallel architectures" but didn't really know what that meant. Now that AP CSP will cover parallel programming, I finally have an excuse to wade into my dad's area of expertise. Yay!

Baby Type'n'Play now uses ToneJS to play tones based on the most recently pressed key's character code 🎶

I've uploaded the parallel programming demo to Github pages: It uses TensorFlowJS (w/ Mobilenet model) + WebWorkers (via ThreadsJS) + HighCharts Gantt viz. Oh, and it detects cats. Try it out!

I'm working on a demo of parallel programming in the browser, using web workers. Using max workers does max out every core, but using 1 worker still utilizes multiple cores. Is the browser doing multi-threading, or is that happening lower level?

...we also use machine learning on our security camera footage, and it regularly annotates him as a dog. We've been told his body is very dog-shaped. (He's the black&white one, if thats not obvious)

My hobby is running pictures of our cat through machine learning algorithms and watching them fail to think he's a cat half the time.
