    This is my husband's grandfather, Morris Koll, as a young US soldier in 1902. He contracted leprosy in the Philippines and as a result was later confined by his own government. His story was the genesis of mine.

    Waking up from my Covid coma and having the ICU nurses explain to me that, no really, everyone’s wearing masks now and the quarantine is quite real. That was April, when I first woke up. I didn’t really see for myself until I could walk outside in June.
