Today, #AB767 is being considered by the CA Senate Public Safety Committee. The news coverage has centered on the expansion that allows survivors of police violence to access victim compensation. There's another BIG win that's getting less attentionhttps://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2020/08/06/ab767-police-brutality-victims-compensation/ …

Victim compensation is a lifeline for survivors of crime that reimburses them for expenses like medical bills and counseling. In order to qualify, survivors must provide documentation of the crime, most often in the form of a police report (with some exceptions discussed later).

Do survivors have the needed documents to access victim compensation? Annually
@BJSgov conducts a survey of survivors of crime. In 2018, they found that only 43% of violent victimizations were reported to the police; in 2017 it was 45%. https://www.bjs.gov/content/pub/pdf/cv18.pdf …1 reply 0 retweets 1 likeShow this thread -
We know from
@BJSgov that >50% of survivors of crime aren’t reporting to police. Right now, many survivors of crime can’t access financial resources that could help them recover from the crime they experienced because they don’t have a police report.#AB767 changes that.1 reply 0 retweets 3 likesShow this thread -
#AB767 would allow survivors of all crimes to use forms of documentation other than police reports to verify that a crime occurred, an option that is already allowed for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking.1 reply 0 retweets 3 likesShow this thread -
This important change will ensure that we are no longer asking survivors of crime to pay for their own victimization; survivors of all crime, regardless of whether or not they report to the police, will have access resources to help reimburse medical bills & counseling services.
