Although written by HIC authors, an interesting piece that at least attempts to get local perspectives on short-term experiences (and co-authored by a recent co-conferencer of yours): I'm interested to see what others share.

  10. All intro courses on global health must include some content on such short-term missions and the ethics/risks. See the presentation in my course :

  11. Interestingly, many of these papers have been written by HIC experts. If anyone has seen guidance from LIC colleagues on short-term global health missions, please share! Thanks.

  16. This is just a sample. There are several sketchy NGOs which facilitate these short-term medical voluntourism missions for a payment. Students in HICs have no idea how to separate the good from the bad.

  17. #6 Students: We plan to go trekking in an LMIC, and on our way back, we will visit some clinics and see 'interesting cases'. Me: This is 'global health voluntourism'. It is self-serving. It does not benefit the local institutions or local people.

  18. #5 Med students: We want to invite 1 medical student each year from an LMIC to visit our medical school (in HIC), to learn anatomy from us. Me: How is this a sustainable solution? Even if they learnt anatomy, what about training in other subjects?

  19. #4 Med students: We are visiting a rural hospital in an LMIC where they rarely see surgeons. We can help & conduct surgeries. Me: This is called ‘surgical safari.’ You cannot operate without being licensed. Surgery requires continued care, and must be done by local teams.

  20. #3 Med students: We can to visit an LMIC and start a small clinic and run it for a month. Me: 1) You are not licensed to practice medicine; 2) What about sustainability of the clinic when you leave in a month? 3) Who is there to supervise you?
