I was just accused of misandry because I chose to circumcise my sons, and do not equate male circumcision with FGM - this on a thread about the NYT article on the special #misogyny of #childbirth. I am blocking the #trolls but felt this would be an appropriate responsehttps://twitter.com/tnicholsmd/status/1080282950418092032 …

How the hell are they NOT the same? Genitals are sliced up in both cases. Both are done for cultural/social reasons, because they somehow look better, even for supposed hygiene benefits. Both are dangerous and disfiguring. They ARE the same and are an injustice.

One has demonstrable medical benefits. One is used to control female sexuality. I wouldn’t consider those the same.

Believe me, we’ve had that conversation. We’re not Jewish, so there was no religious reason. Mom said the doc just assumed they wanted me cut, no real explanation given. I have very little sexual sensation where the foreskin would be. Very frustrating.

You can oppose both but you need to understand how radically different they. On a spectrum of "bad", FGM is literal oppression and falls on a separate part of the spectrum and men trying to undermine the gravity of that by arguing that male circumcision is the same is ridiculous.

Yours is a very common view, but it is based on stereotypes from bad research from the 1970s; no scholar of female and male genital cutting in the last 30 years would take this claim seriously. I understand and respect those who oppose male circumcision, however, you cannot put it on the same level as FGM and say they are the same thing because they are not. Please stop comparing apples to oranges.

countries that advocated FGM also outline the medical benefits. You simply live in a culture like that, except the mutilation is of boys.

What are the medical benefits to FGM? There are none. Male circumcision does not imply the end of a healthy sex life for men quite the contrary for women.

The supposed "successful" circumcisions carry their own complications, unnatural curves and bends, painful tight erections due to the lack of skin to accommodate the expansion, glans desensitization, poor orgasm control & response.
