See "On the Invisibility of the Drowned Worshippers" http://www.sisabianovenia.com/LoLeido/NoFiccion/DrownedWorshippers.htm … I.e. We do not see those who are burned out. We only see those rarely hardened ones and presume our treatment of them was causal.pic.twitter.com/Zzxvo4GETi

There are dogmatic beliefs around hardening people to harsh reality via judgment and fear, except usually we are the ones reinforcing that reality, and people don't end up hardened; they end up burned-out and leave.

Consider what brain states are usually activated when the average person fails an assessment. It is theoretically imagined that these are: self-reflection, growth, motivation, optimism. When in fact they are likely closer to: fear, alienation, rejection, hopelessness.

It is worth thinking about which practices of this type exist in your org or workplace and whether they're simple to change. An obvious one is looking at any mechanisms of assessment, examination or judgement that exist. These are usually set up in ways that harm safety.

~most people are ingrained in institutional practices that harm or limit dignity and safety due to inherited industrial legacies, perceived scarcities, prejudices, ignorance.

Managers in software companies, in my experience, are on average terrible at understanding humans' basic needs for dignity and safety.

This brings to mind the awful performance review practices in many companies. For me, working at
@facebook was a mostly bad experience. Mental health suffered because of their competitive and "prove your worth" culture.https://twitter.com/allenholub/status/1224375863455600642 …Prikaži ovu nitHvala. Twitter će to iskoristiti za poboljšanje vaše vremenske crte. PoništiPoništi -

I’m confused. How did we conclude that the best way to prepare kids for the future is to cluster them into a setting where they are organized by age, into grades, and forced to learn the same things, at the same time and pace, 7 hours a day, 5 days a week, for 12 + years? Huh?

I don't want to live in this world anymore. When we exhibit the vulnerable to tug on our tired heartstrings we are saying we value the cessation of suffering not for its own merit but for its power to make us feel. As if it is a currency.

I get why people like this but this makes me mad at modern society. A clearly emotional and fearful man having his vulnerable position exploited for publicised mass approval on social media. We're sick.https://twitter.com/RexChapman/status/1223660436337385477 …

It was fantastic to be in the open world after so long in hospital. I think the little issues with accessibility will definitely grate on me after a while though.

- people are generally very kind but can be slow in creating enough room for you to pass or get through a gap
- even accessible buses can be embarrassingly slow to get on and off of, quite awkward when passengers are staring at you

Impressions: - cobbled paths of cambridge are not a friend
- just because a starbucks says it's loo is disabled doesn't mean it's large enough to manoeuvre a wheelchair within
