In the newest post for Dragonfly Research, @ashwinrz and I tell the story of the life and death of Plasma.
Two years ago, it was supposed to be Ethereum's saving grace. Now it's been completely left behind. What exactly happened, and why did Plasma die?https://medium.com/dragonfly-research/the-life-and-death-of-plasma-b72c6a59c5ad …

Actually
@StarkWareLtd is pursuing a design somewhat similar to Plasma with ZK-rollup elements (basically data is off-chain, but on-chain proofs of correctness). See:https://medium.com/starkware/starkexchange-8045695b798 … -
ZK plasma has the same data withholding issues as regular plasma, just no mass exits The "trust-free" model is rollup, the "trust-based" is custodial. "trust-minimized" is maybe a bit better than custodial

I find it a little surprising that the big win here is that "you don't have to publish witness data". That's a small constant factor win, no?

But I guess that's what you mean: They're looking for a small constant factor win, then sharding to carry ETH the rest of the way.
