Re study of police shootings, scroll up for full flavor. Another example of social science using “control” like a magic verb that manufactures truth. If only there were an axiomatic framework for deciding causal queries...

Polarization by association? Ex nihilo?! “[policy] endorsement [by political parties] ...generate[d] a polarization in opinion among voter groups”—☝️wait for it—“even when there was previously none.”

Many participants complete online conjoint experiments on mobile phones. When the number of attributes or amount of text is sufficiently large, researchers may prefer vertical adjacency of profiles to horizontal adjacency. No one talks about this, but surely this affects results.

If: social, environmental, sustainability challenges are the result of human/social understandings, behaviors, choices, institutions, and politics, Then: we cannot technically engineer our way out of these challenges.

My EJPR article on clarity of responsibility and foreign policy is now in print! Does the government's perceived FP performance influence vote choice? Yes it does. Does the government's structure moderate this relationship? Yes it does.

The logic (?) behind the assassination of Soleimani seems partly driven by a long-standing approach to the Islamic Republic by Trump whisperers using Kremlinology of state elites and inaccurate historical analogies to US-Soviet relations in the 1980s. /1

Yesterday the new york times dropped a story confirming that Rockafeller sabotaged president Carter and worked with terrorists on behalf of Ronald Reagan to rig a presidential election and encourage America to engage in the middle east, and literally no one fucking cares.

In our data-driven world, the claim that we don’t have a good way to study something quantitatively may sound shocking. The reality even worse — in many cases we don’t even have the vocabulary to ask meaningful quantitative *questions* about complex socio-technical systems.

This. If your design is not causal, the interest of your findings shouldn’t hinge on causality. Let’s call it the golden rule of observational research.
