Today I signed a contract with Oxford University Press to publish my first book‼️🤓 Title: The Spirit of the Game. It's a cultural and intellectual history of the relationship between Protestants & sports in the modern US. Hoping for a 2021 or 2022 publication date.

Happy birthday Baylor! Seven years ago I was a high school teacher in Nebraska when I visited Baylor for the first time. Had no idea how much my life would be shaped and changed by this place—one PhD, two kids, and one awesome job later

Was traveling this week which meant lots of airport downtime. Which also meant I was finally able to read ’s latest. Such a good book. I now want some historian to do the exact same thing but for coaches’ wives

Since Rodgers is apparently good friends with Rob Bell and since John Piper resides in the city of Green Bay's NFL rival, there's surely a John Piper/Rob Bell joke in there somewhere. I'll let someone else workshop it.

The first 30 minutes of this podcast features talking about why he left the church. Lots of evangelical-ish references, including: ✅Young Life ✅Rob Bell ✅The Shack ✅Predestination ✅Being "spiritual" vs. "religious" ✅Purity rings

And even if the Christianity angle doesn’t interest you, if you are at all into basketball history you’re gonna want to keep up with the newsletter. Curtis has long been a go-to source for smart and interesting (and online) basketball history content.

This week in parenting: My 2yo son found his Halloween bucket. A couple times a day he now brings it over to the candy cupboard, looks up, and asks “Candy? Trick or Treat?” It was adorable the first time, I’ll give him that.

In 1924 James Naismith was asked to identify the single most important element in playing basketball. His answer back then might very well be the answer an NBA coach would give today. The field goal percentage that Naismith described as average—20%—prob wouldn’t fly though 😂
