The catalyst for this is a virus with a (so far) relatively low mortality rate and a total of 12 infections in Australia. If that’s the bar, then expect Australia to become to a fortress when any future natural disaster/global crisis hits.

They wouldn’t be put on Christmas Island if they weren’t mostly expected to be Chinese-Australians. I’m certain if they were UK-Australians a non-prison like facility would’ve been set up somewhere central.

The travel ban should have been put in place 10 or so days ago, we don’t know how fast this virus can spread here with no vaccine. At one point there would have only been 12 cases in China, so what’s your point? We shouldn’t take measures to try to prevent the spread here?

New Zealand also announced a ban, along with many other countries - Italy after only one case diagnosed. It’s obviously necessary until this is under control.

I’ve heard hardly a peep from those who campaign in this space. And the political and media class are so deep in the carceral system, no one has batted an eyelash. So when we say ‘we’, we mean the polity. Civil society. Our reps. Key actors. The broader tapestry of society.
