Robert E. Lee was treasonous, period, end of discussion.

-
Yup. Should have been tried as a war criminal. The tour guide at the White House of the Confederacy in Richmond, VA did not like that question from me.
-
They locked up Jefferson Davis, letting Lee remain free established the myth of the noble Confederate warrior fighting for home and noble culture...
-
There was serious discussion of treason for both but it was felt that the country would heel faster if they showed forgiveness.
-
How did that work out asked Jim Crow
? -
This is just like what we experience today...smart people feeling that everyone would inform themselves of the issues and doing the right thing. Problem is there are too much willing ignorance in the US for that to succeed.

He went to war for state's rights. He didn't want his beloved Virginia to be encroached upon. His mistake, but slavery wasn't the main issue for him.
-
States rights is an apologist lie. The confederates knew they were doing it for the RIGHT to own slaves and were fighting back over the horrors of treating the “obviously subhuman” black people as equals deserving rights. It’s in all their contemporary speeches.
-
The states rights idea never even was spoken of until way after the civil war because it was a post hoc justification
-
Secession itself was a test of states rights over federal authority but slavery was the catalyst. However, ‘traitors looking to create slaveowning country bc federal authority did not represent local economic interest’ also true for Washington, Jefferson, etc.
-
No it wasn’t, you’re just lying to feel better about your odious beliefs
-
Odious beliefs? In favor of taking down monuments by the way and would create monuments to honor slaves. Also in favor of accurate history. My tweet is objectively true.
-
“Sorry to break it to ya pal, but My thoughts about the political views of long dead slavers are objective facts”

You guys should just give up this journalism thing and join the
#StatueHunter brigade. Plenty of jobs to eliminate history out there and you guys are our trusted leaders. I can get you some rope, a pickup truck and plenty of woke white folk to help stop the racist, killer statues -
There's a big difference between acknowledging history and revering men, with statues, who were traitors to the United States, and through their treason are responsible for the deaths of over 600,000 men, women, and children. You should probably figure that out.
-
Maybe pick up a history book and study city war history. Never saw any statue kill anyone, but maybe reading a plaque describing what and why this things happen will teach people where we came from and move forward to make things better rather live in the past
-
And btw, just b/c someone disagrees w/ your POV, you don't have to be a dick abt it. I've studied CIVIL War history, thanks. Clearly one of us understands the difference between understanding the roles of historical figures, and honoring them w/ statues in the public square.

-
Hardly a dick about it. The fact is clear. Erasing history - good or bad - is a lack of interest in learning from the past. Very few museums have statues of historical figures. Every City in America has outdoor statues. Better get to work to save us.
-
apparently tony here has never heard of these things called books. the only way to learn history is to erect statutes to honor racists. i cannot wait for some of those hitler and stalin statues or else we'll forget ww2 and the cold war.
-
There is a Stalin statue in NYC and one proudly on display in Seattle sir. Sadly, he is a hero to many "progressives" in this county who think communism is cool.
