Next time someone in DC proposes an ambitious effort to reshape some far-off corner of the world, please remind them that we're apparently incapable of designing an app to tally up a few thousand votes in Iowa gymnasiums

On the bright side, as a Floridian I am relieved that, at least temporarily, there is now a state that people hate more than mine.

It’s great to provide people with the basics they need to survive, but to expect them to be “victims,” feel grateful and even be HAPPY deprives them of justice or the possibility of restitution. Not sure what the solution is, because Humanitarian aid is clearly necessary as well

I was thinking back on this. this isn’t just a Turkey or a journalism problem. This is the usual “humanitarian” response in the wake of disasters, from Puerto Rico to Palestine to Rakhine. These disasters are deeply political but survivors are depoliticized

News moves insanely fast. On Saturday I wrote a short report about Rashida Tlaib’s comments about Clinton for my Arabic media class and today I am turning it in and it feels like it happened a decade ago

This excerpt from historian Rashid Khalidi's new book, "The Hundred Years' War on Palestine," was supposed to appear in the Wall Street Journal today. But the Journal abruptly decided not to publish it at the last minute, so we ran it instead.

Does rooting out corruption require political revolution or incremental change and reform? It depends whether you see the problem as a principal-agent-client problem or a collective action problem. From: Why Anticorruption Reforms Fail by Persson, Rothstein, and Teorell (2013)
