We often use sports as an escape from the mundane and ugly things in life. And that's fine. That's what sports is for. But we shouldn't hide behind it. Sometimes, we can't and shouldn't look away from things that make us uncomfortable.

Even if you read nothing else by Chalke – for lack of time or other reasons – I request you to read the Appleyard book. Appleyard was one of the greatest ever bowlers. He needs to be talked about more. And nobody did more justice to him than Chalke.

Bob Appleyard, perhaps the greatest bowler of all time, was born on this day, 1924. The raw numbers, even without the back story, are mind-boggling. Appleyard played just 9 Test matches. He took 31 wickets at 17.87. In 152 First-class matches, he got 708 wickets at 15.48. +

Few cricket writers have mastered the craft of stitching together delightfully chosen words to narrate beautiful tales with empathy without compromising on facts. Stephen Chalke is one of them. A genius.

🧵 Stephen Chalke, arguably the greatest cricket writer of all time, was born on this day, 1948. I have been asked about my favourite cricket book from time to time. It is a difficult question, but my favourite cricket biography is Appleyard’s, by Chalke. +

Some of these are difficult to find in India. Again, thanks to for making The Summer Game available in India. In 2006 (or 2007?) the Kolkata Book Fair had Australia had a theme. In other words, plenty of Australian books. I went broke on cricket books.

Everyone should have a Gideon section in their library. Summer Game is an outstanding book. Only personal opinion, but I keep re-reading ‘The Cricket War’ every few years, as that’s my stand-out.

The first Gideon Haigh book that I read (in 2003). Such a loving book with so many delightful passages. Writing that uplifts. Writing that gets you to love the game. (Still can’t believe Gideon trusted us with the rights to republish it. So so thankful.)

Many Gideon Haigh fans hail The Summer Game as his greatest work. Compliments like “Haigh’s greatest work” can make cricket readers desperate. Unfortunately, the book had been out of print for years, and prices of secondhand editions on various sites were often astronomical. +

The Summer Game does not merely make you more knowledgeable. Many cricket books do that. It does something more: it leaves you wiser. Not merely Haigh’s greatest. One of the greatest cricket books of all time.

The Twitter blue tick is neither necessary nor sufficient to be a paid troll these days, but over a large sample, I am fairly certain that there is a high overlap. Have blocked so many in the aftermath of the wrestlers’ protest and the Balasore tragedy.

Coromandel Express is also known as the hospital express in Bengal. This is the train lower middle class Bengalis take to go for treatment in Vellore. This is why the train is overcrowded.

A scathing report by senior railway official raising alarms about the system failure months in advance went unheard meanwhile hours before the train accident, the railway minister chose to skip presentations on rail safety at a brainstorming session.

In the 90s this song used to be played in DD National when there were no Pvt channels. Spreading msg of Peace, Harmony & Love across races, religions & ethnicities. Today when division & hate are at their peak, we can only recall as such Gems as no more created or played. 🌺🌹🌺
