Sorry about that brief “Connection Security Error” — should be fixed now. (Upgrading SSL settings.)
FWIW, I would only consider progressive-download support, not true “streaming”. It would let you begin playback of partial downloads.
Based on responses, streaming might not be worth its likely very large opportunity cost. I might table it for now and revisit in the future.
More and more people tell me they don’t need streaming. Is that because of background downloads, or I’ve just scared off the streaming fans?
The way I planned to manage streaming vs. regular downloads in iOS 8 doesn’t work well in practice, so I’m trying alternatives.
1.1 is coming along nicely with full iPad support, rotation support, and a lot of small improvements and fixes. Probably not streaming yet.
Just fixed a weird server-side issue that was causing Twitter logins in Overcast to fail.
That said, I’m always trying to find faster, more power-efficient methods to do things, of course. But it’s already very efficient.
Fast playback increases power draw not primarily because of effects, but from decoding and processing more data per second from the files.
Quick iOS 8 battery-blame info: - Playing at fast speeds uses more power (in any podcast app). - Most-used apps will likely rank higher.
Overcast is now an iPad app… accidentally. And it looks ridiculous. http://www.marco.org/2014/09/17/overcast-accidentally-universal …
Oh, hey Apple’s Podcasts app… Funny running into you here.
*awkward pause*
Oh, right. This is @OvercastFM, my… new podcast app.
@OvercastFM yeah this is happening w/ lots of apps. It resolves itself after a few minutes.
Many reports of the 1.0.4 update being installed repeatedly, or still being the old version (1.0.3). Looks like App Store issues. Watching.
Overcast 1.0.4, due out tomorrow, requires iOS 8. Previous Overcast versions will continue to work for at least 3–6 months, probably longer.
Better stuff coming later.
The imminent 1.0.4 version is the first iOS 8 update. It’s minor, and mostly just aims to make Overcast *work* on the new phones and OS.
1.0.3 was just approved and it should be rolled out to your phones in the next few hours. It’s mostly just bugfixes, but a lot of them.
Overcast cake! (Catching up on yesterday.) http://instagram.com/p/spnUXcCzTH/
