Otago and UK researchers have developed a world-first weight-loss device to help fight the global obesity epidemic: an intra-oral device that restricts a person to a liquid diet. Read more: https://www.otago.ac.nz/news/news/releases/otago830110.html …pic.twitter.com/Of6v3uvVbX

To clarify, the intention of the device is not intended as a quick or long-term weight-loss tool; rather it is aimed to assist people who need to undergo surgery and who cannot have the surgery until they have lost weight.

After two or three weeks they can have the magnets disengaged and device removed. They could then have a period with a less restricted diet and then go back into treatment. This would allow for a phased approach to weight loss supported by advice from a dietician.

why? If they need life-saving surgery like a transplant and are too risky to operate while overweight they’d die. In the end, it’s still the patient’s choice but if I was int hat situation, I’d lose weight and get the operation I needed.

Ok so you could have spent this time figuring out how to do these surgeries on larger bodies, and not invented a new fun torture device.

First tweet: "to help fight the global obesity epidemic" Lead researcher: "The main barrier for people for successful weight loss is compliance [...] It is a non-invasive, reversible, economical and attractive alternative to surgical procedures."

In addition, the device can (obviously) be disengaged for emergencies... so... it is useless for those who already couldn't modify their diet on their own.

We could be funding research into making anesthesia safer for higher-weight people, which would have the added benefit of helping people who can't crash diet for safety reasons, and instead we do this shit.

Or investing in like, walkable neighborhoods, affordable fresh food, medical care, and family support so mom isn’t too tired to cook after her second job. But no. Starve the fatties. That’s so much better.
