Otago and UK researchers have developed a world-first weight-loss device to help fight the global obesity epidemic: an intra-oral device that restricts a person to a liquid diet. Read more: https://www.otago.ac.nz/news/news/releases/otago830110.html …pic.twitter.com/Of6v3uvVbX

To clarify, the intention of the device is not intended as a quick or long-term weight-loss tool; rather it is aimed to assist people who need to undergo surgery and who cannot have the surgery until they have lost weight.

After two or three weeks they can have the magnets disengaged and device removed. They could then have a period with a less restricted diet and then go back into treatment. This would allow for a phased approach to weight loss supported by advice from a dietician.

Liquid diets aren’t healthy. This is also a choking hazard. Or if somone is being attacked this could be life threatening

why? If they need life-saving surgery like a transplant and are too risky to operate while overweight they’d die. In the end, it’s still the patient’s choice but if I was int hat situation, I’d lose weight and get the operation I needed.

Ok so you could have spent this time figuring out how to do these surgeries on larger bodies, and not invented a new fun torture device.

Some people can't afford $25,000 for the surgery.

This didn't come until halfway through the article. And it said "could" be useful, not "This device was built with people prepping for bariatric surgery." If this was the aim, the article didn't convey that at all.pic.twitter.com/RQKnkR1sbq

The tool could be particularly helpful for those having to lose weight before they can undergo surgery, and for diabetes patients for whom weight loss could initiate remission.

This "clarification" isn't backed up by the text. This is a torture device. How is anyone involved in this still in academia?
