Pretty sure this is an unpopular opinion but I am very pro border these days. People crossing might not matter today, because we have so many cases here anyway. But let’s say we contain this. We will need borders. And planning ahead is good.https://twitter.com/MercedesGlobal/status/1243201211580506112 …

Hasn't Bryan Caplan been posting about how Border Controls need to be very very strict to see those gains?

Do you mean this? https://www.econlib.org/pandemics-and-open-borders/ … And yeah it seems right to me that the border controls would have to be quite strict.

I think I need a better model of the rate between disease protection and trade/freedom of movement/immigration. The actual rate based on what the USG does not some ideal.

My intuition is that if there's effective measures put into place that are what's needed to slow/stop the spread of disease, then there might be a case for tighter boarders being worth the cost. If "tighter boarders" is merely security theater...

then it's clearly bad. And the actions of the USG in the last 3 months, at all levels, makes me think any real attempt to tighten borders will be all cost and no benefit.

Thanks! I agree that saying borders are useful is a bet on the US being able to eventually respond effectively. It wouldn’t actually shock me if the USG never really managed test and trace but private companies and nonprofits made it happen.
