Hey @ezraklein @dylanmatt @KelseyTuoc - have you considered writing a Vox article about this Vox article? I know it seems self-indulgent, but you can't tell me that news outlets spend too much time looking at specifically their own errors.https://twitter.com/robertwiblin/status/1238823281752506370 …

      Paul Crowley added,

      Robert Wiblin @robertwiblin
Vox published a dangerously misleading clickbait piece about COVID-19 on Feb 13, despite being told ahead of time about its errors (https://www.vox.com/recode/2020/2/13/21128209/coronavirus-fears-contagion-how-infection-spreads …). Is there any accountability for Vox or the journalist now it's even clearer how wrong they were? Any shame even? 1/2

The purpose isn't to dunk on one particular journalist, but to use this unique opportunity to shine a light on how errors like this get made, and in the process demonstrate unflinching self-examination and walk back the erroneous article.

      Paul Crowley Retweeted Ben Goldhaber

Right now the articles point in a different direction, but with no acknowledgement of earlier badly flawed articles, it all feels a bit "Vox has always been at war with the coronavirus"https://twitter.com/BenGoldhaber/status/1238848986888298497 …

The lack of (as far as I can tell) self-awareness is the mind-blowing part to me, all very Orwellian - "What are you talking about, Vox has always been at war with the Coronavirus!"

Here's what I wrote on February 5, more than a week before that piece.https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/2020/2/6/21121303/coronavirus-wuhan-panic-pandemic-outbreak …

      And here's three pieces our science reporter Julia wrote in January: https://www.vox.com/2020/1/30/21076686/coronavirus-outbreak-wuhan-china-who-emergency … , https://www.vox.com/2020/1/21/21075017/coronavirus-sars-wuhan-china-pneumonia …,https://www.vox.com/2020/1/27/21082354/coronavirus-outbreak-wuhan-china-early-on-lancet …

Do you have numbers on the relative reach of those pieces? It's still a problem if you write 10 good takes for every bad take, but the bad take gets 1000X views as all the good takes put together.

Still a problem, but a harder problem to fix or to blame any single actor for. All of us would look like vicious imbeciles if judged by the stupidest or most morally misjudged thing we've ever said. If society collectively platforms only your worst speech, then what can you do?
