What is farebeating? Is it when one doesn't pay his/her fare when boarding then train/bus? I'm trying to equate a possible life death situation with someone who can't afford fare.

Yes. NYC has been running a huge campaign against farebeating this year - extra cops in stations, ads on trains - claiming it’s a major factor in our transit budget problems. The irony, of course, is that the prevention efforts probably cost far more than the turnstile jumpers.

Those quibbling with the word “probably” are correct - it *is* far more wasteful. To convey the daily version of this scene to non-NYers, picture 3-4 cops, guns at their waists, standing around chatting while watching commuters swipe into a subway. It’s intimidating to everyone.

Making it worse, MetroCards doesn’t always WORK. You swipe once, can’t enter, but the card reader registers it, eating the cost of a single-ride, or freezing a weekly/monthly pass for 18 mins at that station. Say someone’s broke and late to a job interview. What do they do?

One might think, “Well, in that situation, the passenger would have a strong case to argue that they did what was fair and necessary.” NOPE. It’s specifically written into the local transit rules of conduct that if the reader is broken, you still gotta pay again!pic.twitter.com/L9Qyb53qfg

This happened to me. Machine was busted, locked out my card. I tried to walk through the open door only to get caught and arrested. Big difference is the cops treated me very gently, no throwing me on the ground or anything. But then again, I'm white.

Arrested. For a fare violation. Couldn’t they just give you a ticket, which would still be nonsense, just to be clear.

they do that in Germany. Germany also has stewards/stewardesses who walk through the train to punch your ticket. if you don’t have one then you’ll get a fine.🤷🏿‍♂️ seems like a fair (not so much a waste of time) system to me.
