How much money do you think you'd need to live the rest of your life comfortably without working? And I mean VERY comfortably--nice house and car, kids' college paid for, fancy vacations, generally Living The Dream? Think of a figure.

Followup question, once you've got a number. Why does anyone need more than that?

Because every number I saw named in the replies is insufficient for one person to live a lifetime in significant comfort, much less a family. (My *real* answer involves the economics of innovation and should be obvious.)

Wait, how do you think normal people are even alive then? I don't have a million dollars, but I'm not living on pond scum.

The key words are "lifetime" and "significant comfort". If I live another 50 years, $5m is $100k/year. Which is nice if you have no dependents and don't live in an expensive/desirable city, but hardly a fortune.

$5m is $250k/year at 5% interest i think that's enough for me and my future family to be fully comfortable, baring no civilizational disasters

Only if you want to live in a place with a sane housing policy. Otherwise I would expect rent to eat that in the next 50 years.
