“...the current culture of contempt, which often reduces conflict to declarations of the other side’s worthlessness — not just in today’s ghastly political battles but also in increasingly hostile relationships...” Yep. Contempt culture. That is a problem.https://twitter.com/arthurbrooks/status/1096409805013610496 …

I genuinely have difficulty distinguishing between the alt-right and the alt-left. It’s like “fascist” versus “communist” dictatorships where you have to Google to know which side it’s supposedly on. Authoritarianism is authoritarianism, contempt culture is contempt culture.

Is there an "alt-left" or have people just started using "alt" to mean "far"?

I don’t know why people call it anything other than “alt-left” in the first place. Do a search and replace on the hate targets and you get alt-right. Remember when Trump was a Democrat? Alt is alt.

Since the term “alt-right” is a fairly new invention there has been no reason to use it on anyone alse than the movement who gave themselves that name. What meaning are you putting in the prefix “alt-“?

As I recall, the "alt right" was called such to distinguish them from established figures on the American Right, eg Bill Kristol, George Will, Pat Buchanan. They were the alternative right wing for people who didn't like the current right wing.

Who are the established far left that the "alt left" are an alternative for? My understanding of that fight is that all the players claim to be the "true left" and everyone else is a poser.
