Even just listening to the key-shifting acrobatics had to go through to virtually accompany the rendition of the National Anthem is exhausting. You’re a hero, sir.

It’s imagery like this that seeps into our childhood and stays in our hearts and souls forever. DOLITTLE has been officially rewritten to remove the Bumpo plot and grotesque Lofting caricatures. But really all that does is let publishers pretend the original never existed.

DR DOLITTLE was white supremacist to the point where even as an elementary school student I felt sick to my stomach. But the story was also charming and delightful and none of my white classmates who’d read it noticed how gross the idea of using acid to burn your face white was

The most wildly racist book I ever read was the original STORY OF DR DOLITTLE—which my school library had in its version illustrated by author Hugh Lofting. It has a storyline where Dolittle makes an elixir to turn an African prince white so he can pursue his white dream princess

Personally I’m against removal of racist items like these from popular culture. I’d rather they be used as teaching aids to show how these images became pervasive in society, with clear kid-level intros that are as fun and accessible as the originals. But that’s too hard I guess?

  15. The likes of Ben Shapiro are calling this “censorship.” Please note: It’s Seuss’s own trust that’s blocking further publishing of them to “preserve his legacy” (eg hoping people stop associating him with racist images he often included in his work—many of them aimed at Asians)
