Nataliya and I built a database of the tech workers movement in a project called Collective Actions in Tech. We sat down with the data to understand some of the trends. See our report here:

Breaking: A group of Instacart workers in Chicago just voted to unionize-- a historic first. This victory sends a powerful message to gig workers around the country who are fed up with working conditions.

This is what we’re seeing today with China. Last year, Thiel declared that AI is first and foremost a military technology, and that it must be kept from China. In other words, anti-chinese nationalism is used to justify the militarization of AI.

In the 70s, the Japanese government launched “Fifth Generation Computer Systems”, an initiative to develop supercomputing for AI. The US responded with xenophobic backlash, portraying Japanese tech development as a threat to national security.

If we’re serious about tackling the dangers of AI, we have to address the military origins of this technology. Before its current hype, AI, for decades, has been funded entirely by the military. It was only recently that Big Tech took over the reins.

stop trying to use machine learning to make the police less racist. Being racist is integral to the function of the police. If you want to stop racist police violence, abolish the police.

If you want to learn more about how the police was formed in the us, read this: TLDR; the police was created to prevent the threat of a slave insurrection in the South and to discipline free black slaves into compliant low-waged laborers.

Why are ppl still surprised that the state colludes with "private" tech? Reminder - the internet is military tech - AI is military tech - cloud has (basically) bcome military tech We need to stop using this rhetoric as fodder for sinophobia & resist all militarization of tech

"when not to build" unethical AI systems is not about morality but about power. And in tech, power has never been more concentrated. If we want a voice in what gets built, we have to get organized, build power, and make these decisions democratically.

People at seem to think computer scientists/engineers need to read ethics and take ethic classes. Wrong. They need to read Marx and get organized.

Contradictions abound at FAT*, but a basic one is that by and large, the algo fairness community isn’t a social agent capable of making its own desired changes. Execution is left to corporations & states (thus utterly toothless) or activist-organizers (who aren’t reading papers).
