In the long term I am not sure themes will even be relevant to be honest. Someone will make a design system plugin that styles everything nicely and lets you swap fonts and colours. And then sites can be built entirely in the editor.
The more we develop for #Gutenberg, the more I think future #WordPress themes will only be a collection of styles for blocks. Supporting multiple sidebars, page templates, and header media will likely be obsolete in the near future.

It is more of a matter of how WordPress will help users with block templates. It will be/already is difficult for many users. Whatever the future system will be called, themes or something else, it needs to be implemented.
