This morning, my son, an Army E-7, volunteered to deploy to war, even though his unit is safe from deployment.
I asked him why.

He received a call this morning from a 19-yo soldier he trained overseas. They'd grown close during their service together, and 27 stayed in touch in a mentor role, even after both returned to the States to serve separate locations. 19 was sent to Ft. Bragg.
The tone of 19's call was terror. Sheer panic. Open sobbing. 27 cried, too. He is an empath. 19 kept repeating things like, "I don't wanna die, Sarge!" "Please help me!" Of course, 27 couldn't do anything to prevent his soldier's deployment.
He did call his contacts to get an idea of when 19 might be called up. He got an off the record guesstimate. After finishing with 19, my son went to his Master Sergeant's office and volunteered. The reason?
He said, "If my soldiers, KIDS of 17, 18, 19, can be sent to war, I can go, too. I can't just train them, and send them off alone." He explained the Brotherhood the best he could, and said he felt an obligation to those under him that he helped train.
I immediately understood why 27, my first born, a natural empath who joined the Army at 18, would volunteer to deploy.
As my boyfriend said, "that just shows he's a million times the man Trump will ever be."

Thank you! He hasn't received an assignment, but as soon as the conversation with his Master Sergeant was over, 27 was told to go home and pack. It could be tonight. It could be next week. Next month. Never. The waiting is awful.
