lifelong patronage of individual scientists by rich people needs to be revived
is there a good history of this somewhere? eg: how did the scientists and rich people meet? how many scientists per rich person? what sort of expectations did the rich people set, or did they pretty much just leave their scientist alone and hope they were productive?
