Maximizing shareholder value is a perfectly fine idea. The problem is, it's been interpreted by corporate governance paradigms to mean "Maximize the PRICE of your shares RIGHT NOWNOWNOW" which is not even in the same universe.

Folks come at it with the perspective that everyone is incredibly selfish and then act all surprised when the C folks act to maximize their own income, company long term future be damned. Capitalism cargo cultists are weird.

There appears to be a TBTF problem here. Creditors should be checks on risk-taking encouraged by shareholders but in the case of Boeing they were not. Likely because everyone knows Boeing will not be allowed to go broke.
