I personally don't agree with this. As a PR I will take the time to look at your channel to see what type of games you like, stream and the community you build around that. I do not see being a verity streamer or using the word "variety" as hurting yourself or your prospects.https://twitter.com/WillJPowers/status/1095379882823970816 …

I've certainly never looked a variety streamers channel and think "they play lots of games so they aren't consistent which means I won't send them anything/work with them". Heck, I spent the last 6 years as Channel Manager for a verity channel!

Verity channels can mean an engaged, open minded audience who might not have considered you game in the past but who are willing to watch and engage with something different and new. It can be a great way to open your game up to new players!

Thats what I always thought of “variety streaming”. I know my audience is more open to try different games I play because they’re not there for 1 thing only. I know several times people experienced games they never thought they would and were happy about it

This! Influencing a variety crew is much harder than selling it to an already dedicated niche group! Also, take it from us streamers who focus on 1-2 game series only, from a business standpoint it can be super limiting for growth and exposure! Both types have their benefits.

I hear this a lot from streamers. There is a lot of pressure to either A) play whats popular or B) specialise. It can feel limiting when your tastes are varied and you desire to branch out. It's hard enough growing a channel/community without also feeling boxed in creatively

Personally I decided to forget what was popular and play what I enjoyed/wanted to drew attention to both on my personal Twitch or our YouTube channel. For me highlighting a variety of games and experiences was the BEST part of it.

I don't think anybody fits into a single genre "box" any more. Sure, 'variety' streamer is pretty vague, but surely it just goes to say that they are very confident in covering a broader range of games?

It is a vague term and maybe that is where this person is drawing the negative connotation from? However, as a PR I do feel it's my job to look at a persons channel to gain an understanding of what they do, what they are streaming and the community they're creating :)

It’s great to hear this insight and seeing so many CM speaking up about it since other tweet went live and could discourage some streamers from requesting “out of comfort zone” games, leading to missing on having great experience. Thank you! :)

I'm probably the biggest wimp about but I pushed myself to request a key for a horror game a short while back. I was suitably frightened and definitely regretted it, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it! Stepping out of a comfort zone is great and should be encouraged IMHO :)
