“only a minority of scientists we studied perceived the relationship between science and religion as one of conflict. Most scientists around the world ... view the relationship between these two spheres as one of independence or collaboration. “

Smart thread on Nancy Cartwright's argument on why RCTs / experiments / etc. can't serve as the gold standard in understanding social causality. One main problem is that they can't provide estimates of "pure" treatment effects net of how they are modified by the context at hand.

I’m looking forward to hearing people’s opinions about the value of correlations. I go back to a very early thread of mine lamenting that so often I review a paper that would’ve been a great descriptive paper but the authors chose instead to make it an unbelievable causal paper

This. If your design is not causal, the interest of your findings shouldn’t hinge on causality. Let’s call it the golden rule of observational research.

Why--practically & ethically--was this a retraction & not corrigendum? Error found (it happens) & then corrected. Reanalysis still produced evid. abt a rsrch q, but b/c now null, was retracted. No malfeasance. So if effect held, then no editor retraction? Corrigendum instead? 2/n

On this note, a few years ago I wrote a paper about the social lives of the Spiritual But Not Relgious. No judgement about their spiritual condition, but their social condition seems just fine.

Great clip. I’ve taught the paper behind it (in World Bank Research Observer) at both undergrad and grad level. Great illustration of power of RCTs (which I’ve been picking on a lot lately).
