on top of this, would be great to see airbnb back open source foundations they depend on also and hiring engineers to actually contribute to these projects, that's the path towards sustainability
that’s a big part of the intention of our current donations to Open Collective :-) (We also do already pay our engineers to contribute back whenever we can!)
yes, that's only one part... what about Linux (@linuxfoundation)? Kubernetes (@CloudNativeFdn), JS (@nodejs and @the_jsf)
All those foundations are welcome to join open collective as well. That’s what @rubytogether did. That way it’s easier for sponsors like @Airbnb, @coinbase and many others to manage their financial support across many projects.
I'm well aware... there's a difference between supporting a foundation and employing developers full time versus the tipjar approach of open collective (you also take a 10% cut versus 0% at a foundation), I'm overdue on a longer blog post on this topic :)
Lastly, our model is not tipjar. Many have tried that before. Our model is to push for subscriptions to make it sustainable over time. Look at Babel & Webpack. They are now making enough recurring revenue to pay people. We are far from done, but w/ your help we will get there.
