Anyway, this was found at the end of an otherwise unremarkable Umatic tape mostly recorded over with ABC Schools programs, but about 10 minutes at the end revealed this original recording. I had no idea how much tape was left, or indeed if the entire performance was recorded...

It also sounds like there's occasional shuffling of papers, which must have driven the recording engineers bananas, but I find so relaxing - it's like someone's reading to you. Not like the modern, cold, silent recordings. And they're fine, I can live with them, but this is great

My current audiobook is a 1998 production and whether it comes from the equipment or a tape, there's a low level hiss that is so comforting. The noise gating is also not intrusive, only really coming in after about a second and a half.
