...performance on a 1st Gen PAL Umatic tape. The only way you're going to get a better copy of this recording is if the 2" Quad tape of the Science Fiction Film Awards is digitized. So this is it. This is as good as it will ever look. Bask in it.

so i pressed record on my capture card and hoped the entire performance had magically been recorded. I sat there watching it play yelling "DON'T END EARLY YOU FUCKER", and eventually, 40 seconds AFTER the entire performance, the Umatic tape ended, meaning I had the entire...

Anyway, this was found at the end of an otherwise unremarkable Umatic tape mostly recorded over with ABC Schools programs, but about 10 minutes at the end revealed this original recording. I had no idea how much tape was left, or indeed if the entire performance was recorded...

(Related, I just bought an audiobook on 14 cassettes far cheaper than I could get it any other way, so that'll have tape hiss a plenty. As it turns out, Cassette is the optimum format!)

(I mean, it's entirely probable that it was made on a ProTools system back then, but something in the chain has a little hiss in it and it just brings everything together for me)

It also sounds like there's occasional shuffling of papers, which must have driven the recording engineers bananas, but I find so relaxing - it's like someone's reading to you. Not like the modern, cold, silent recordings. And they're fine, I can live with them, but this is great

My current audiobook is a 1998 production and whether it comes from the equipment or a tape, there's a low level hiss that is so comforting. The noise gating is also not intrusive, only really coming in after about a second and a half.
