The Two Laws of Customer Path-Dependency: 1. It's hard to take your marketing/sales upmarket, it's 10X harder to take your marketing/sales downmarket. 2. It's hard to make a product enterprise-ready, it's 10X harder make an enterprise product simple for SMB/end-users adoption.

1/ I helped 4 different companies in the last 3 months with this. The patterns are so common that I had to write about it: If you're using an analytics platform like or , there is a right way to do it. Here's why most analytics fail —

Generally, once a corp dev team gets close on an acquisition, if it doesn’t work out, they buy something else. See Uber recently buying Postmates after they lost out on Grubhub. So, one can say TikTok helped even out the console wars. That is all.

I would imagine Bethesda approached Microsoft or vice versa about some console exclusive deals just like Sony, and that’s how this deal evolved. One other element is Microsoft was pretty deep into mobilizing a lot of capital to acquire TikTok, and instead spent money here.

Dishonored 2 (developed by Arkane) has some of the best level design of the last generation. Tango was founded by the creator of the Resident Evil franchise, and while The Evil Within games didn’t sell that well, I find both to be fantastic.

What is also interesting is this announcement comes after two of Bethesda own studios made their next games PS5 console exclusive in Arkane (Deathloop) and Tango (Ghostwire). These are arguably the two best studios Bethesda has right now, and both are new IP.

and while Hellblade was great, it was niche, and a sequel doesn’t really make sense for it (They’re making one anyway). It felt like these were toe in the water acquisitions rather than needle movers. Bethesda’s IP, if made exclusive (and the games are good), is a needle mover.

You can tell Microsoft learned this and announced that they would invest in acquiring more studios, and have with Obsidian (The Outer Worlds) and Ninja Theory (Devil May Cry, Hellblade). While Devil May Cry is good IP, The Outer Worlds was disappointing...

Spider-man, God of War, Horizon, Last of Us Part II et al. also sold 10+ million copies and drove PS4 purchases. The challenge with online multiplayer models is they have to be cross-platform to work best, so they aren’t console differentiators.

2/ a new Elder Scrolls is years away. Fallout 76 was panned. Sony arguably won the last generation by having the best one player games, which is counter-intuitive given the industry/fans’ push toward online multiplayer (Fortnite, GTA Online).

1/ Games industry tweetstorm. I find this Microsoft Bethesda deal very interesting. Zenimax is a large, private company that owns many studios and great IP: Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Doom, Wolfenstein et al. The company is definitely not at its peak. While Doom is doing okay...
