  1. I recently read Meng Jin's debut novel, Little Gods. It comes out in January and is beautifully written.

  2. Thanks to everyone who came out to this tonight, and to Chris and Adam for being just brilliant human beings. It was so much fun.

  3. From the very first page, Quarrels by Eve Joseph is a marvel.

  4. Recently I read an advance copy of "A Luminous Republic" by Andrés Barba, available in English translation in April of next year. A novel of real emotional depth. Another witter called it Lord of the Flies but seen from the other side. I think that's about right.

  5. A bunch of my friends in Portland are comedians, so I end up going to a lot of shows. There's this guy named Mohanad I saw at a couple of miserable dives a few years back. He's really, really good. And the other day he made it on to Conan:

  6. Tonight my friend launched her incredible new book, in Toronto. It's a genuinely astounding piece of work and you're going to hear a lot more about it in the next little while.

  7. Apropos of nothing, I watched the terrible Dalton-era Bond movie License to Kill yesterday. Turns out it features a young and stunningly good-looking Benicio Del Toro, who has one line of dialogue in the first 90 minutes and delivers the hell out of it:

  8. Garth Greenwell wrote my favorite novel of the decade. His commencement address, on the real and fraudulent lives of literature, is beautiful and honest.

  9. From The Long Take by Robin Robertson. Such a beautiful book.

  10. The folks at the University of Alabama's Honors College are hosting me this week, and have been so, so kind. I arrived at a reception here tonight and found these cookies waiting for me.

  11. From "The Red Tenda of Bologna" by John Berger.

  12. This is the "For sale: baby shoes, never worn" of literary festival signage.

  13. I'm at a literary festival in Newfoundland. It's very pretty here.

  14. Arab literary festival afterparties are the best literary festival afterparties.

  15. American War was published one year ago today.

  16. Solmaz Sharif reading her collection "Look" is one of the most beautiful and powerful things I've heard in a long time.

  17. Odgovor korisniku/ci

Just starting this one. I'm told it's pretty devastating.

  18. Covers: upload a cover of a great book without saying why, note who invited you ( ) tag 8:

  19. American War comes out in paperback on Jan. 30th. in the US and Canada.

  20. Deeply grateful to the folks at for hosting me this week on the very last stop of the American War hardcover tour, and for letting me check this incredible building off my library bucket list.
