i may be misunderstanding, but i think this is a bit more nuanced. turning default private to public sharing for files is a choice, and one that make sense in many contexts for content that may want to be shared.

The problem wasn’t that the companies turned on sharing of folders, the problem is that the URLs of the shared folders were guessable by outside actors. If you share a folder with “anyone who knows the url” you’re expecting that url to be like a password.
