    Programs are really hard to write and maintain. People who don't realize this shouldn't get anywhere near your codebase. People who do realize this should seek out every possible way to make things easier. You're not just coding for you, after all. (Unless you are!)

    Unit tests are great at making sure that code behaves well when the rules are followed. They are not great at preventing programmers from calling your code in ways you did not expect and do not support.

    If you are content with communicating rules in unenforceable ways, then all programming languages may look the same to you. But I hope you either work by yourself (and can remember all of the rules) or don't work on anything important.

    Rules can be communicated to other developers in a number of ways. From most shitty to least shitty: email to dev team, code comment, runtime assertion, compile-time errors. A programming language can be judged on its ability to turn rules into compile-time constraints.

    Most code has rules. This might not even be realized by the author. I define rules as things that make it not OK to use the code in a certain context. That can be validity of inputs, or it can be side effects. Even functionally pure code can still have rules.

    I did some questionnaire at some newspaper website about which dem candidates agree with your positions on things. 20 questions, highest I got was 13 agrees (Biden/Bloomberg), lowest was 1 (Warren). Several "no candidates agree with you" responses.
