• DO NOT go by the philosophy “they’re interviewing you, but you are also interviewing them!” This is program specific advice, but for competitive programs, make sure you are prepared! (2/11)

Being invited for an interview means you are good enough to be accepted, but DOES NOT mean that you have been accepted. You still have to impress your interviewers! (3/11)

• Explaining your research takes practice! It also is usually the first thing you talk about, so your explanation can set the tone for the whole interview - don’t underestimate it! (4/11)

Remember that the publication cycle for papers can be long - a paper that was published this year, means that the initial research idea was thought of 1-5 (or longer) years ago. (7/11)

More recent papers will reflect the more current research in the lab, & what the PI more likely wants to speak about. Always a good question to ask: "what are current projects in your lab?" because there could be projects currently underway that aren't even published yet! (8/11)

• My interview mantra was "Cool, Calm, Clever". I tend to speak fast when I’m nervous! If you take your time speaking slowly, you'll be clearer and have more time to think about what you're saying, and this might help you “appear smarter".(9/11)

It will also help you use less filler words! (my big crutch word was saying "like" a lot). Take your time, make sure your breathing is regular, and know that a momentary pause is totally fine if you need to collect yourself and is better than an "um" or "like". (10/11)

Lastly, confidence is key -remember that you got this!! You deserve to be invited to an interview and your future contribution to research is invaluable! That program would be lucky to have you!! (11/11)
