Can't believe I haven't used clippy so far. But anyway, I am now. Fixing all of the things. The code is already so much nicer.

Clippy is great, but sometimes it helps to tune it a bit. I have a few #[allow(clippy:let_me_be_stupid)] around; either because something actually is complex or because I don't need to be reminded quite so often when prototyping.

agreed, I've ended up adding a few of those as well. I will probably keep my regular build workflow without clippy but use it every now and then (or maybe in CI) as an additional step.
